Medical Alert Systems
Medical alert systems sometimes known as medical alarms are designed to provide you or your family member with 24/7 monitored medical emergency service, ensuring that you will be safe, independent, and secure at times when you most need it.
What is a Medical Alert System & What Will It Do For Me?
Medical alarm systems work by allowing the user to summon help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the press of a button the you will be put in contact with the medical alert provider’s professionally trained phone bank staff who will have your medical history on-hand to call your friends or family members, dispatch an ambulance, or call the police to come to your aid.
By wearing your lightweight, waterproof personal help button, no matter where you are in your home, help will find you when you press the button.
Medical alert systems are suitable for:
• Active seniors who live alone
• New mothers
• Those concerned with personal safety or security
• Patients with chronic medical conditions
• Those who are physically challenged
• Post-operative patients.
Medical alert jewelry including bracelets, necklaces, watches and wristbands are avaliable so you can wear them at all times without them being noticable.
HOW DO MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEMS WORK?
Medical Alert Systems usually have three components: a small radio transmitter (a Personal Help Button carried or worn by the user), a console connected to the user’s telephone, and an medical emergency response center that monitors calls.
If emergency help (medical, fire, or police) is needed, the Medical Alert System user simply presses their Personal Help Button. It sends a radio signal to the console. The medical alert system is programmed to telephone your providers emergency response Security Center where the caller is identified. All information about the subscriber (name, address, medical conditions, allergies, hide-a-key location, etc.) will immediately appear on the computer screen of your providers emergency dispatcher.
The Security Center’s experienced operators will try to determine the nature of the emergency. Security Center staff also may review your medical history and check to see who should be notified. If the Security Center cannot contact you or determine whether an emergency exists, it will alert your local emergency service providers (paramedics) to go to your home. The Security Center emergency dispatcher will stay on the intercom with you and will continuously monitor the situation until the problem or emergency crisis is resolved.
SELECTING A MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEM PROVIDER
When selecting a medical alarm service provider you should consider the following points:
1 Low pricing should not be your only criteria for a medical alert system. Be sure to consider the benefits and features of each provider not just the cost.
2 Insist on at least a 30-day money back trial. Medical alert providers who are confident in their service will always offer a money back trial which gives you the opportunity to try a medical alert system without any financial risk.
3 Look for providers that operate their own monitoring center. The outsourcing of medical alert monitoring is quite common because most providers cannot afford the expense of having their own facility. It is preferable to have management staff to oversee the quality of service, which is nearly impossible to do when you outsource to a third party.
4 Get real customer testimonials. See what people are saying about the company. Check for customer testimonials both positive and negative and read them.
5 Ask about the training process for operators. The level of service is extremely important to a medical alert system. In the case of an emergency, you will want qualified Care Specialists to assist you when every second counts. Always ask what type of staff training is provided.
6 Look for medical alert system providers that have 24/7 customer & technical support.
7 Select an established medical alert system provider. Experience is extremely important. Dealing with someone who has been in the life safety monitoring business a short time is not advised.
8 Make sure your system includes repair & replacement service.
9 Choose an medical alert system that automatically tests itself frequently. This is one of the most important functions you have to check. The system sends a silent signal to the monitoring facility on a weekly basis, reporting that your medical alert system is connected and functioning.
